Engine Rebuild - Initial Disassembly

Back in June, I delivered the engine to Kurt LeViere of Southington, Ohio.  He’s been specializing in Aermacchis for the past 18 years.  Kurt assured me that he was Mr. Sprint, and that if anyone could get my bike on the road, he could. I decided to allow Kurt to tear into my engine.

Below are photos of the initial diassembly.  Biggest problem was that the piston was frozen in the cylinder.  Taking a look at the cylinder head, we saw that there was massive amounts of crud in the exhaust port.

After Kurt pulled the head, it was time to look inside and see exactly why our motor wouldn’t turn.  Finding the mess you see below confirmed our suspicions: the piston was siezed.

To the left is a shot of the engine sitting on Kurt’s workbench just before “surgery” began.

Once the head was yanked (below), this is what we saw. Yuck!  Take a look at more detailed photos and text on the cylinder head page.

Next it was time to see how far we could pry the jug. Given what we saw inside the cylinder, we were surprised it moved this far.  Time to get out the “break free.”
