Sprint 350 Project

Status as of January 2000

Like most everything else lately, it’s been a lack of time not money, that’s holding up this “easy” project.

The upside, however, is that I’ve been able to rethink and evaluate a few of the earlier choices I made.  The biggest one involves replacing the stock drum brakes with a set of disc brakes.  After talking with Steve Storz at Storz Performance (http://www.storzperf.com) Grimeca 1000T calipers on both ends. Steve recommended 10-inch rotors, and appropriately-sized master cylinders (13mm bore up front, 16mm out back). After considering the costs of replacing the rims and relacing each wheel with 38 new spokes, not to mention sourcing the needed OE brake parts, I’m thinking going with juice brakes will be no more expensive, and help get the little wop ready for the 21st century.

As has been the case since last June, the bike's completely torn down. The engine still awaits some investigative work by a local import bike shop to free up what appears to be frozen rings.  We’ll take care of any other necessary work at that time, including a new clutch. And, of course, the longer it takes to complete the project, the more things we’re gonna wanna do to it.  In addition to the brakes, I’m now thinking about having a wee bit of head work done, considering rejetting the carb or replacing it with something a bit larger, and seeing what I can do about boosting the ignition system’s output.

When I get to replacing parts, I won't be throwing anything away. Right now it appears I’ll have parts for sale or trade, so if you’re interested, drop me a line or watch for a posting of parts when we finally finish the bike.

Obviously, my plans to have the Sprint on the road by December '98 have been dashed.  Surprised? I’m not. Shit happens, y’know?  Anyway, don’t give up on us. Stay tuned for future developments!
