www.LoudPipes.Com Product Review

February ‘99

Many bikers collect pins as mementos of runs, special events, or to tell their bros a bit about their philosophies of life and what being a biker means to them.  An annoying part of displaying such pins on one’s leathers is that the cheapo clasps eventually fall off.  That’s annoying enough, but when your cherished pins get lost because you didn’t notice the clasps fell off, well, that can really be a downer.

A little while ago, while perusing the ads in the back of an issue of V-Twin magazine, we came across an ad for these little gizmos called Pin Loks.  After trying these out, this is truly the miracle product pin collectors have been looking for.  This is an ingenious system of ensuring you keep those irreplaceable pins where they belong.

Here’s what you get:  A bag of 10 Pin Loks, each of which is comprised of a barrel-shaped piece of chromed steel that slips over a stud on the back of the pin, and a small set screw to lock it in place.  Also included is a small Allen wrench.

At the left is a closeup—almost actual size—of the Pin Lok components and the included Allen wrench.

As one would expect, installation is simple.  We’ll illustrate the process on a pin that isn’t mounted on a jacket or vest so you better appreciate how easy these things are to use.

 • Take your favorite pin, such as the one shown below left, and remove those crappy clasps from the back.

 • Insert one of the small Allen screws over the end of the wrench, and start it in the side of the barrel clip.

 • Slip it over a pin stud, and tighten, as shown in the photo below right.  Not surprisingly, that’s all there is to it.

The photo at the right shows you the final result, as contrasted against the typical alleged clasp.  Your pins are permanently secured, and if they fall off, you obviously forgot to tighten things up.  Once you apply a little torque to the set screw, your pin is going nowhere unexpectedly.
