Before installing those shiny new drag pipes, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, be aware that drag/straight pipes will require you to richen the jetting on your carburetor. If you don't, not only will you ruin that nice shiny new finish, but you will likely also damage your valves, pistons, etc. with the excessive heat caused by too lean a mixture. Next, and equally important, be prepared for a significant decrease in bottom end and midrange performance. Your performance benefits will become obvious in the higher RPM ranges. This is due to the fact that drag pipes are free flowing, providing low restriction with low back pressure — great for the strip, but bad for the trip! You can offset this problem by installing a set of "Tork Cones," such as those produced by White Bros. These ingenious little devices fit between the exhaust port in the head and the pipe mouth. They dramatically improve bottom end and midrange power on your drag pipe equipped V-twin. So, now that you've re-jetted your carb and installed those pricey little "Tork Cones" go ahead — fire it up, take it for a ride and start setting off car alarms! |
